Introduction to Pottery Handbuilding Series - 3 Weeks
Ages 17+
This beginner series is designed for adults looking to learn the fundamentals of hand-built pottery (this is not pottery wheel). Hand-built pottery encompasses a wide range of applications, such as functional wares (mugs, bowls, etc), as well as sculpting figures and small items such as garden figures, buttons and pendants. This class will also introduce you to the concepts of how pottery is made, how to operate studio equipment (such as our slab roller) and forms, the use of underglazes and glazes, as well as studio protocols, safety and proper cleanup. This series is mandatory to be eligible for Open Studio Membership.
Class 1:
-Introduction to the studio, equipment and an overview of the process of how pottery is made.
-Preparing clay and cutting templates to make a mug.
-Step-by-step instruction on construction of your mug, learning handbuilding techniques, embellishment, texturing and tips to ensure success.
-Cleanup.
- 3 hours.
Class 2:
-Introduction to use of plaster and wooden forms to make functional wares, like bowls and plates.
-Introduction to sculpting. We will make some simple forms to embellish our functional pieces.
-Cleanup.
-3 hours.
Class 3:
-Introduction to the use of underglazes and glazes.
-We will spend this class glazing the pieces we made in class 1 and 2.
-Cleanup.
-3 hours.
Cost of this series: $250.00 plus GST
Cost includes:
-Basic Pottery Tool Kit (which you keep).
-All instruction.
-10lbs of clay (additional clay may be purchased at front desk).
-Use of studio glazes, underglazes and kiln firing of finished pieces.
**You must bring your own apron, plastic bag and towel to class as we have no onsite laundry.
